WE’RE KIDS, THEN AND NOW

(Alliot)

What I learned about life I learned so much in High School (borrowed from "What I Learned in Life I Learned in Kindergarten). Greek philosophers might argue that at 21, your values in life are pretty much made. But not us, Cebu City National Science High School batch ’83. We made them at 16. We were taught about the values of responsibility, honor, education, friendship, love, ambition, and hosts of other positive things, surprisingly, not from our mentors alone but mostly from our classmates.

We celebrated our 35th year of friendship this year (though I wasn’t in every grand celebration that we have but, in spirit like our departed brothers Julius, John and Rudlin, indeed I was). I guess all of us agree that we value our high school family (yes, that’s what we call ourselves) more than we value our elementary and college colleagues. Social media some 20 years ago didn’t exist yet we always find a way to connect. Think, we are scattered maybe in five continents and we still could reach out with one another without Facebook and Twitter. We always are updated on who got married, who has new kids, etc. In every achievement that we have, everyone shares the happiness and bliss.

Like a family, sibling rivalry exists and there always is a someone from the batch who would extend an extra finger to mend broken hearts. In times of need, material or otherwise, everyone is there for them who are in need. And I believe prayers are overflowing when we need one. I did experience that one time or another.
I don’t really know whether it was the school’s design or just the bond of friendship that holds us together. After all, it doesn’t really matter what made us a family as long as we remain as one. I really don’t miss the days back then because we are still the same kids today as we were before. Kudos, Batch 83.
